Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing ( E.M.D.R)

EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment method that was developed by an American clinical psychologist, Dr Francine Shapiro, in the 1980s.

Since then a wealth of research has been conducted demonstrating EMDR benefits in treating psychological trauma arising from experiences as diverse as war related experiences, childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect, natural disaster, assault, surgical trauma, road traffic accidents and workplace accidents. Since its original development, EMDR is also increasingly used to help individuals with other issues and performance anxiety. EMDR has been found to be of benefit to children as well as adults.

How does EMDR work?

When a disturbing event occurs, it can get locked in the brain with the original pictures, sounds, thoughts, feelings and body sensations, EMDR seems to stimulate the information and allows the brain to reprocess the experience. That may be what is happening in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) or dream sleep-the eyemovements, bilateral tapping or tones may help you to reprocess the unconscious material. It is your own brain that will be doing the healing and you are the one in control. It works by helping the malfunctioning part of the brain (the hippocampus) to process distressing memories and flashbacks so that their influence over your mind is reduced.
